EASL 091A Music and Pronunciation

Selkirk International

EASL 091A Music and Pronunciation is a multi-level interactive seminar in which students use songs of their choice to identify and practice features of English pronunciation. Students gain fluency, improve intonation and rhythm and increase their ability to produce difficult sounds. In addition, there is the opportunity to expand vocabulary through the many idioms and collocations used in popular songs.

Corequisite: Current enrolment in the English Language Program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. recognize some of the major components of the English sound system such as stress, rhythm, intonation, vowel sounds and consonant sounds.
  2. identify these features in natural speech by analyzing a variety of authentic music samples.
  3. demonstrate an improved ability to notice these features, or lack of them, in their own speech and the speech of others.
  4. speak more natural sounding English with regards to individual sounds, sentence stress and rhythm.
  5. recognize the meanings of, and use a variety of popular idioms and common English collocations.
