EASL 066 College Preparation - Research Writing is an advanced writing course that focuses on various forms of writing that can be found in the academic and the work world. In addition to formal academic research techniques, this course will also explore practical technical writing skills needed for clear, timely, concise and accurate communication. The writer must focus on the purpose and audience as well as the form, style and organization. In this class, students will produce a variety of practical and academic forms of writing, including correspondence, summaries, instructions, proposals, reports etc.
Prerequisites: EASL 056A with a minimum of 60% or equivalent

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

- demonstrate understanding of all forms of plagiarism; correctly use paraphrases, quotations and documentation.
- use correct techniques for citing and referencing research sources.
- vary written style and tone according to the purpose and form of specific written assignments.
- write a well-supported point of view in an argumentative text and in a critical response.
- use a range of complex structures and vocabulary in concise, well-structured sentences.
- refine use of appropriate connectors and transition devices to create coherence and unity.
- edit for wordiness, clarity, purpose, strength of message, length and audience.
- identify and revise grammatical and lexical errors.
- work willingly and actively to review and peer edit.
Teaching and Learning Approach
Instructors in the English Language Program use a communicative approach to teaching and learning. Lessons
often include inter-active discussions, group work and reflection activities. Learner success in English Language
courses is often demonstrated in tests & quizzes, presentations, assignments and active participation.
Assessments include self and peer evaluations. The responsibility for learning is shared between the instructor
and the student to foster independent learning skills.
