EASL 035 Intermediate Grammar - Structures. This course provides instruction and opportunities for students who speak English as an additional language to practice grammar at an intermediate level. Students study and practice selected grammar structures, including connectors, gerunds, infinitives, passives, adjective and noun clauses, reported/direct speech, basic conditionals, comparisons, and phrasal verbs.

Prerequisites: EASL 025 with a minimum of 60% or equivalent

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Connect ideas in sentences
  2. Use basic English punctuation
  3. Make comparisons using comparative and superlative forms of adjectives and adverbs
  4. Use count/non-count nouns and articles
  5. Recognize and use limited adjective and noun clauses
  6. Identify and use gerunds and infinitives.
  7. Integrate preposition combinations in complete sentences
  8. Employ separable and inseparable phrasal verbs

Teaching and Learning Approach

Instructors in the English Language Program use a communicative approach to teaching and learning. Lessons often include inter-active discussions, group work and reflection activities. Learner success in ELP courses is often demonstrated in tests & quizzes, presentations, assignments and active participation. Assessments include self and peer evaluations. The responsibility for learning is shared between the instructor and the student to foster independent learning skills.
