EASL 057A Advanced Reading - Academic Reading

EASL 057A  Advanced Reading - Academic Reading is an advanced course which includes study and discussion of a variety of modified and authentic academic reading selections taken from the textbook and other sources. The course focuses on the development of vocabulary and specific reading strategies, including making notes and summarizing information, as well as on the understanding and analysis of texts on academic and social topics. Students develop their ability to read critically and discuss academic texts and to use a unilingual English dictionary.

Prerequisites: EASL 047 with a minimum of 60% or equivalent

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. decode the meaning of many unfamiliar words using context and grammatical cues.
  2. apply a variety of reading skills to gather information from short, authentic academic texts.
  3. paraphrase and summarize short, authentic academic texts.
  4. analyze and respond critically, orally and in writing, to information in short authentic academic texts.
  5. recognize purpose and bias.
  6. search library databases and other sources for reading and reference materials.
  7. use appropriate citation and referencing format.

Teaching and Learning Approach

Instructors in the English Language Program use a communicative approach to teaching and learning. Lessons often include inter-active discussions, group work and reflection activities. Learner success in ELP courses is often demonstrated in tests, quizzes, and presentations. The responsibility for learning is shared between the instructor and the student so as to foster growth in language learning skills.
