SROM 172 Ski Lift Functions, Maintenance and Regulations. The development of uphill transportation systems and passenger ropeways in particular, has enabled recreational skiing to evolve into a thriving industry. The continuing evolution of passenger ropeway technology and passenger conveyer systems continues to shape the character of ski resorts and the quality of the ski and snowboarding experience. SROM 172 examines passenger ropeway technology as it is applied in today's winter recreation areas and resorts. In this course, you will examine the mechanical functioning of passenger ropeway components in the most commonly used passenger ropeways in the ski industry today - fixed and detachable grip chairlifts. You will also identify passenger ropeway maintenance requirements and preventative maintenance procedures. Finally you will learn about passenger ropeway regulations in Canada, including the CSA Z98 Standard.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify and explain the design and mechanical functioning of passenger ropeway components and control mechanisms for fixed and detachable grip aerial ski lifts
- Explain the basic maintenance requirements for passenger ropeway components of fixed lifts and detachable grip aerial lifts
- Identify the main contents of the Elevating Devices Safety Regulation governing passenger ropeway operations in British Columbia
- Identify the main components of the CSA Z98 Standard that apply to the design, safe operating practices, and maintenance of specific ropeway components for both fixed grip aerial lifts and detachable grip aerial lifts
- Identify and explain the various types of non-destructive testing applied to passenger ropeways and the appropriate types of N.D. tests for specific ropeway components
- Describe and explain the fundamental design, features, and applications of passenger ropeways from rope tows to multiple haul rope systems
