SROM 153 Organizational Leadership. This course is designed to help prospective supervisors understand how individuals and organizations function effectively. It provides students with a working knowledge of the formal relationships between employees and management in the work place through the study of leadership styles, motivation, group dynamics and conflict resolution. Students will gain an understanding of the skills required to lead people and contribute to a team effort. This course also examines changes in society and how they are influencing organizations relating to employee and management roles in time management, stress management, and problem solving.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Understand key topics and trends in organizational behaviour
  2. Understand leadership styles, strategies and techniques for facilitating employee performance and development
  3. Analyze the implications of various leadership styles on group and individual development
  4. Analyse factors in group dynamics, decision making and teamwork
  5. Demonstrate the ability to apply leadership strategies and techniques
  6. Develop a plan for motivating staff
  7. Demonstrate the ability to use negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  8. Apply systematic techniques for problem solving and decision making
  9. Demonstrate professionalism towards course participation
  10. Develop personal plans for time and stress management

Teaching and Learning Approach

This is a student-centered approach which will blend together theory and practice. Experiential opportunities will be had within the classroom, online, community and in an industry setting where possible.
