OTEC 175 Computerized Accounting

OTEC 175 Computerized Accounting introduces students to an integrated computerized accounting system using Sage 50 Accounting for Windows. Utilizing business scenarios, students will establish company records; maintain daily transactions using the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory, and payroll features; and create financial statements.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Explain the terms relevant to GST, HST and PST
  2. Set up and operate an integrated accounting program for a business
  3. Create General Ledger Accounts
  4. Record, post, and adjust daily business transactions in the General Journal
  5. Use Payables Journal to create suppliers and record transactions
  6. Use Receivables Journal to create customer accounts and record transactions
  7. Use the Payroll Journal to set up employee records and record payroll transactions
  8. Complete payroll runs and reports and prepare Record of Employment & T4 slips
  9. Set up and record inventory-related transactions
  10. Create sales and purchase quotes and orders
  11. Create an Accountant’s copy
  12. Pepare financial statements

Teaching and Learning Approach

Students will practice hands-on exercises to learn computerized accounting steps and processes. Textbook reading highlights the key concepts and offers step-by-step keystrokes for various transactions. Students develop their skills through a series of company scenarios, theory tests and practical projects. Multiple practical assignments give the students the practice and feedback they need to confidently record and post transactions and prepare financial statements. Strong computerized accounting skills and understanding supports the student’s overall objective by enhancing comprehension of financial documents and procedures in the workplace. Following examples and structured steps, students develop a range of valuable computer skills essential for the office environment.
