This course, MUSC 291 Fundamentals of Private Studio Teaching, studies aspects of effective private studio teaching. Topics covered, but not limited to, include: pedagogy, literature, technology, business plans, methods and materials to support a teacher’s attributes and philosophies essential to the successful private instructor.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe effective philosophies and attributes needed to be a successful private studio teacher
  2. Communicate their philosophy of education
  3. Critique a variety of music teaching methods
  4. Evaluate new educational technology for teaching
  5. Create a business plan and mission statement for their teaching studio
  6. Demonstrate a private lesson
  7. Outline an effective set up for a remote lesson

Teaching and Learning Approach

In this class, students participate in open discussion; students will create practical projects to be used beyond graduation in their music careers.
