MUSC 280 Ear Training III. This course continues to develop an aural perception of intervals, pitches, seventh chords, chord progressions, melodies and rhythms. The focus of this semester is on minor and secondary dominant melodies and chord progressions and 9th chords. The rhythms explore sixteenth note syncopated rhythms as well as cut time, 3/8, 6/8 and 5/4 meters

Prerequisites: MUSC 181 with a minimum grade of 70%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Conduct and sing in 2/2, 5/4, 3/8, 6/8 time
  2. Cing and transcribe minor and secondary dominant melodies with intervallic skips
  3. Sing all diatonic intervals from the root of major and melodic minor derived modes
  4. Sing and transcribe syncopated 16th note rhythms with ties
  5. Sing and identify all 9th chords
  6. Transcribe and understand minor triad and seventh chord progressions and modal interchange progressions
  7. Sing and identify all intervals within 1 octave

Teaching and Learning Approach

Group singing and dictation of chords, rhythms, melodies and chord progressions.

1. Chapter 1 – 9 chords (Maj9, -9, 9, 7b9, 7#9) cut time rhythms without ties, natural minor melodies, 2 bar minor key triad progressions
