ECCE 293 Child-Centered Partnerships II

ECCE 293 Child-Centred Partnerships II, concepts and skills of ECCE 193 are further developed and enhanced; for example, understanding of self within the guidance relationship, creating emotionally safe and respectful environments and enhancing autonomy. Students examine guiding relationships and apply principles and skills to complex situations. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the various community partners and their role in supporting young children.

Prerequisites: ECCE 193 with a minimum grade of 60%. Students can take ECCE 293 as part-time students.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Develop and maintain relationships with children which support their observed needs and respond to a variety of behaviours
  2. Apply theories of development and guidance to understanding the behaviour of young children
  3. Describe and apply a positive approach to assessing and preventing challenging behaviours
  4. Explore and understand the roles of community partners
  5. Write reports and present information on children to be shared with professionals and parents

Teaching and Learning Approach

This course uses a constructivist teaching approach. The student is an active participant in the constructing of new knowledge rather than being a passive receiver of information. Throughout the course group work and discussions, hands on activities and realistic scenarios will provide the learner with the opportunity to engage in a multitude of learning styles. Professionals from the field will be brought in to offer students the opportunity to further explore, question and investigate old ideas of thinking and constructing new conclusions. Studied concepts will practice through assignments which are designed to take the learning outside the classroom, allowing the student to apply newly constructed concepts and understandings.
