ECCE 287 Inclusive Practices

ECCE 287 Inclusive Practices examines inclusion in early childhood settings through an anti‑bias and equity‑informed lens, with a focus on systemic challenges and applied strategies. Learners will analyze inclusive practices grounded in a holistic view of the child, their families and community contexts. Learners will explore children’s diversity, including modes of communication, behaviour supports, and health and safety needs. Emphasis is placed on fostering collaborative care with families and interdisciplinary professionals.

Prerequisites: Completion of the basic ECCE certificate at Selkirk College or the equivalent.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Define inclusion within the context of systemic challenges leading to applied strategies
  2. Analyze inclusion through an anti-biased lens
  3. Plan inclusive practices using a holistic understanding of the child in collaboration with families and interdisciplinary professionals
  4. Analyze children’s modes of communication and various augmentative communication systems
  5. Analyze methods of behaviour supports appropriate for young children with exceptionalities
  6. Identify health, nutrition and safety practices for young children with diverse needs
  7. Identify aspects of care and collaborate with family and professionals for children with complex health conditions
