ECCE 200 Infant Growth and Development. This course will explore child development from theoretical perspectives and will examine ways of enhancing young children's development. Conceptual themes to be addressed include: developmentally appropriate practice, the competent child, diversity, responsive caring, relationships, child centered environments, emotional safety, and creativity.
Prerequisites: In order to receive transferability (course credit) for courses in the ECCE Post Basic certificate in Infant/Toddler, a student must have completed the Basic Early Childhood Certificate with a minimum of 60%.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Explain the nature of research in the area of human development
- Differentiate between developmental processes and environmental influences during the prenatal period
- Describe the birth process and the capacities of the newborn
- Apply the theories of behavior and development of the child from conception to age three
- Analyze variations in development among children including temperament, abilities, issues, and risk factors
- Consider how cultural, ethnic, attitudinal, and economic factors have implications for each child’s developmental pattern
- Recognize the holistic and interdependent nature of growth and development
Teaching and Learning Approach
This course will be delivered in person in conjunction with ECCE285 Practices with Infants and Toddlers
explores the growth and development of infants and toddlers and how we will use this knowledge and
understanding in the practices for infant toddler programs.
This course uses a constructivist approach where the learner is an active participant in the construction of
knowledge. Learners will further investigate course concepts through in class discussions, in class activities,
peer learning and feedback, guest speakers and lectures.
Due to the nature of this intensive 8-week delivery, a number of assignments will be conducted in class for
assessment. Attendance and participation are mandatory for all infant toddler courses.
