ECCE 260 Health Care in Infant and Toddler Programs

ECCE 260 Health Care in Infant and Toddler Programs includes the planning, establishment and maintenance of a safe and healthy environment regarding: food preparation and handling, planning nutritious snacks and meals, diapering/toileting, accident prevention and hazard identification, medication, illness management and assessment, modelling healthy practices and utilizing community health resources.

Prerequisites: In order to receive transferability (course credit) for courses in the ECCE Post Basic certificate in Infant/Toddler, a student must have completed the Basic Early Childhood Certificate with a minimum of 60%.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify ways to establish safe food preparation, for infants and toddlers
  2. Consider the unique aspects of the growth and development of infants and toddlers that affect their feeding, nutrition and eating habits
  3. Formulate and evaluate policies and procedures regarding illness management and prevention
  4. Identify health concerns, sharing information and collaborating with parents, colleagues and resource people to coordinate care and optimize children’s well-being; a. demonstrate respectful and responsive individualized care and communication with children to promote their health through hygiene practices (including diapering/toileting) and create a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere through flexible daily routines
  5. Design and adapt child-safe environments through identification and remediation of safety hazards, teaching safety practices to children, active and responsive supervision and effective accident management
  6. Examine the personal health, well-being and safety of the educator through reflective practice

Teaching and Learning Approach

This course uses a constructivist approach where the learner is an active participant in the construction of knowledge. Learners will further investigate course concepts through forum discussions and peer learning and sharing opportunities.
