DA 210 Illustration and Typography

DA 210 Illustration and Typography introduces students to the anatomy and mechanics of written language so they can use this understanding to successfully work with text and image in their design practice. Students will expand their understanding of form, colour, composition, typography, hierarchy, juxtaposition and sequencing through the practical application of hand and computer skills.

Prerequisites: DA 112 and DA 113 both with a minimum grade of 50%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the anatomy of type
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the mechanics of type
  3. Describe the historical and cultural context of typography in graphic design
  4. Work independently or collaboratively in initiating and realizing ideas, concepts and common goals
  5. Refine visual outcomes through processes of critical reflection, feedback, and prototyping
  6. Arrange graphic design compositions using the principles of design and typography
  7. Communicate design processes and outcomes in visual, oral and written forms with clarity and consideration to the needs of the audience
