DA 132 Interactive Design follows a problem-based approach that will introduce programming structures and techniques including data types, variables, conditional statements, functions and events. It will incorporate interactivity and functionality to standards-compliant web pages using relevant tools and technologies including the use of frameworks, libraries and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to add extensibility and functionality to web based projects. emphasis will be on the development of simple and efficient interfaces and all stages of application development from inception through to implementation and testing.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Use critical thinking and various techniques for debugging programs such as commenting out code, using the console and analysing error statements
  2. Follow good coding practices, such as the use of simple logic, comments and white space
  3. Integrate JavaScript both externally and within an HTML document
  4. Identify and explain the structure and basic syntax of JavaScript
  5. Identify basic programming components such as variables, arrays, loops, operators, conditional statements and functions
  6. Demonstrate the appropriate use of variables, operators, arrays, loops, and control structures
  7. Combine HTML, CSS and JavaScript to create dynamic websites
  8. Incorporate frameworks, libraries and APIs into an HTML document by identifying the requirements and procedures specific to each case
  9. Recognize that jQuery is the most popular JavaScript library with cross browser support and it is used to enhance and create interactive elements on websites;
  10. Use CSS selectors, jQuery and HTML to create interactivity on a webpage
  11. Distinguish the mobile development process from traditional desktop development by comparing device capabilities, connectivity, the impact of screen size and user expectations
  12. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of web vs native device development
  13. Produce effective flow of function charts, storyboards/prototypes and design mock-ups during application planning
  14. Design and implement robust user interfaces for touch based mobile applications
  15. Design, implement and deploy mobile applications using an appropriate software development environment
