DA 104 Introduction to Digital Photography

DA 104 Introduction to Digital Photography provides students with the opportunity to explore composition to capture compelling photographs. Participants will practice using shutter speed, aperture and exposure as a means of manipulating the creative outcome of an image while considering light, visual weight, framing and perspective. Students will apply creative and technical skills to produce a collection of prints that tell a visual story using their own style and personal approach.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Explain terms and concepts related to digital photography
  2. Apply the elements of composition to take effective photographs
  3. Capture images that demonstrate use of visual weight, balance, and tension
  4. Describe how the focal length of a lens relates to lens type and field of view
  5. Critique the composition of a photograph
  6. Explain how the use of shutter speed, aperture, exposure, and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) affect the outcome of a photograph
  7. Use exposure bracketing to capture high dynamic range (HDR) images
  8. Demonstrate creative use of exposure, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, and ISO
  9. Produce a collection of mounted prints that communicate a visual story

A combination of theory-based lecture and context-based demonstration, with regular opportunity for hands-on participation.
