ADMN 250 Managerial Accounting

ADMN 250 Managerial Accounting examines how accounting information is used within organizations to plan, monitor and control. Managers in all functional areas will have to deal with the management accounting system of the organization they work for. The purpose of this course is to ensure that you have a basic understanding of how such systems operate, the language they use and their limitations. CPA Adapted

Prerequisites: COMM 241 or equivalent with a minimum of 60%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe what defines costs
  2. Determine cost behaviour using statistical methods
  3. Compute product costs in a job-order and process costing systems
  4. Determine total and per unit product costs
  5. Calculate contribution margins and break-even points for cost-volume-profit analysis
  6. Explain overhead allocation, absorption costing and activity-based costing methods
  7. Develop budgets that guide business activities
  8. Suggest solutions for the optimal use of constrained business resources

Teaching and Learning Approach

Teaching focusses on developing the student as a new professional. In class time is primarily spent working on shared spreadsheets to develop both a clear understanding of managerial accounting concepts and the spreadsheet and communication skills required in the workforce.

Students are expected to keep abreast of the technical concepts prior to class by reviewing the course notes. The technical will be assessed in weekly quizzes, and small technical lectures will be interspersed with the practical work in class.
