TSOL 109 Teaching Pronunciation

TSOL 109 Teaching Pronunciation is a course that focuses on teaching how to improve the intelligibility of learners' spoken English. Participants in the course learn to identify features in spoken language that block or slow down comprehension on the part of the listener. Corrective activities that can be used within a communicative framework are emphasized.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the features of the English sound system, including vowel and consonant sounds and prosodic features
  2. Use a modified version of the International Phonetic Alphabet to represent spoken English in written form
  3. Perform a rudimentary analysis of an English speech sample and suggest remedial activities
  4. Design an integrated pronunciation lesson based on a communicative approach
