PTEC 217 Institutional Pharmacy Practice

PTEC 217 Institutional Pharmacy Practice builds on the fundamentals of product distribution previously learned and examines the role of Pharmacy Technicians employed in institutional settings. Students examine hospital drug distribution systems and processes, medication safety, principles of infection control and sterile product preparation, and quality assurance / risk management practices.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Semester 1 and 2 courses in PTEC Program

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Differentiate institutional product distribution systems and associated roles and responsibilities of the pharmacy technician
  2. Analyze the principles of infection control, primary modes of contamination and strategies used to prevent contamination
  3. Examine the principles of aseptic technique and the process for preparing and compounding sterile products following regulatory standards of practice
  4. Identify safe practices for preparing, handling and disposing of hazardous agents
  5. Discuss factors that contribute to medication incidents and actions to prevent errors
  6. Examine how pharmacy technicians contribute to risk management and quality assurance as a member of the health care team

Teaching and Learning Approach

This course is 100% online and is 100% asynchronous and builds on students' earlier introduction to hospital pharmacy practice. This course uses a learner-centered approach that emphasizes the application of knowledge to real-world hospital pharmacy practice. Learning activities include assigned readings, interactive learning materials, instructional videos, case studies, assignments, weekly quizzes, and a final exam. These activities are designed to reinforce foundational knowledge while supporting the development of critical thinking, collaboration, medication safety, and professional practice skills. The course is also guided by trauma-informed teaching practices, which aim to create a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment. Clear expectations, flexible learning supports, and opportunities for reflection are incorporated throughout the course to acknowledge the diverse experiences and needs of learners. This approach encourages learner engagement, promotes psychological safety, and supports learner success while developing professional communication and person-focused care skills.
