PTEC 224 Non-Sterile Compounding

PTEC 224 Non-Sterile Compounding is a experiential lab course in which students learn the skills and best practices for compounding non-sterile products including ingredient calculations, measurements, and preparation techniques for creams, ointments, solutions, and suspensions. Students use compounding formulas and drug stability and drug compatibility reference materials in the preparation of products with an emphasis on accuracy and safety. Maintenance of compounding equipment and workspace utilization are integrated into the learning activities.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Semester 3 in the PTEC Program

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Uphold pharmacy standards of practice and code of ethics
  2. Apply federal and provincial regulations to promote safe practice and privacy
  3. Document calculations and technical assessments during product distribution
  4. Compound prescriptions using formulas for topical, oral, and specialty products
  5. Identify common medication safety issues, medication incidents and near misses associated with compounding
  6. Make evidence-based decisions using resources and reference materials
  7. Compound non-sterile products and document the process consistent with legislation and regulations
  8. Use equipment and workspace according to best practices
  9. Collaborate effectively with patients and members of the health care profession

Teaching and Learning Approach

Experiential learning, demonstration and simulation of the steps required to compound non-sterile products. Group and individual instruction and feedback during simulated practice in lab setting.

1. Day 1 - Student goals and introduction to non-sterile compounding. Day 2 - Compounding procedures and documentation, topical dosage forms Day 3 - Patient safety and error prevention Day 4 - Risk assessments and advanced topical dosage forms 2. Day 5 - Liquid dosage forms Day 6 - Quality control, capsules, suppositories, practice for practical final exam Day 7 - Revisit student goals, address any gaps, medication incident reporting, Written final exam Day 8 - Practical Final Exam
