PTEC 221 Prescription Dispensing

PTEC 221 Prescription Dispensing is a experiential lab course in which students apply the knowledge and skills acquired from previous theory courses to process and dispense prescriptions safely, efficiently and effectively in community practice settings. Students practice the technical aspects of processing prescriptions including interpreting prescriptions, performing calculations, documentation, and verification. Principles of inventory management and best practices in pharmacy record keeping are integrated into the learning activities. Students apply and demonstrate effective interpersonal communication and health teaching skills associated with the dispensing process.

Prerequisites: Completion of Semester 3 in the PTEC Program

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Apply federal and provincial regulations and standards to product distribution
  2. Document calculations and technical assessments during product distribution
  3. Document safety practices and inventory management during product preparation
  4. Make evidence-based decisions using resources consistent with scope of practice
  5. Communicate with patients, interprofessional, and intraprofessional team members using shared industry protocols
  6. Collaborate with patients and members of the health care profession
  7. Demonstrate critical elements of pharmacy professional behavior according to code of ethics

Teaching and Learning Approach

Experiential learning, demonstration, and simulation of the steps required to process and distribute prescriptions, interact with patients, and collaborate with team members and other health care workers. Group and individual instruction and feedback during simulated practice in a community pharmacy lab setting.

1. Application of theory to practical drug distribution, calculations, scope of practice, professionalism, patient safety, communication, and collaboration. 2. MedRec and hospital discharges, Vaccines and other injections, Self-care and trauma- informed, inclusive pharmacy care, inter/intra-professional collaboration, and professionalism. Critical thinking, resource utilization, and national exam preparation.
