SROM 251 Ski Area Marketing and Special Events. In today's competitive recreation and tourism marketplace, competent ski area operators understand the essential role marketing plays in keeping ski lifts, cafeterias and lodges busy. In SROM 251 you will explore how ski resorts use primary and secondary market research, advertising media, social media, brochures, consumer ski shows, news releases and special events to boost skier visits. There will be a large hands-on component where the class will have an opportunity to create and run an event.

Prerequisites: SROM 151 with a minimum of 65%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the roles and functions of a ski resort marketing department
  2. Analyze the marketing implications of pricing strategies and structures for a ski resort
  3. Organize and implement a special event
  4. Understand the concepts of special event planning, budgeting, logistics and communication, sponsorship, volunteers, marketing, evaluation and follow-up
  5. Formulate objectives and supporting strategies for a ski resort marketing plan and identify external sources of marketing assistance
  6. Identify sources of ski industry market research and analyze ski industry market research data
  7. Apply various market research methods to a ski resort situation
  8. Identify and apply market segmentation approaches and identify important snow sports market segments
  9. Define and describe cooperative marketing, identify significant ski industry marketing partners including trade associations and others, describe marketing partnership elements
  10. Identify and describe the use of the Internet as a marketing tool including website design and functions, e?marketing methods
  11. Identify and explain the use of significant ski industry advertising tools including brochures, snow sports publications, electronic media, and ski shows
  12. Describe and apply media and publicity relations techniques and tools
