PTEC 102 Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology

PTEC 102 Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology is an introduction to medical language, and the anatomy and physiology of the human body using a body system approach. Students will learn to describe normal functioning of body systems and begin to explore the pathophysiology of common diseases and medical conditions that will be covered in Pharmacology I and Pharmacology II.

Prerequisites: PTEC 101 with a CRG

Corequisite: PTEC 111

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Use appropriate medical terminology to communicate information related to anatomy and physiology
  2. Describe the anatomy and physiology of body systems pertinent to pharmacology
  3. Identify physical parameters used to assess patient health and the pharmacy technician’s role in measuring these parameters
  4. Recognize characteristics of common diseases and medical conditions
  5. Describe the impact of social determinants of health on the well-being of individuals and communities

Teaching and Learning Approach

Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology will provide students with a strong background in the science of the human body and the language used in a health care setting. Students will gain an understanding of how body systems function in health and illness through assigned reading and a variety of online self-study tools. Core concepts will be strengthened through assignments, case studies, discussion forums and guest presentations. The student’s comprehension will be assessed using weekly quizzes and an open book final exam.
