NURS 350 Health and Healing VII: Promoting Community and Societal Health focuses on the role of the nurse in the promotion of community and societal health. It is a companion course with Health and Healing VI and participants will continue to develop their competencies in relational practice with a focus on community and society as client. The political role of the nurse is explored as the emphasis is placed upon working with communities from a social justice and equity perspective. Community development and capacity building as a pattern of community health promotion practice, is explored. In addition students will further develop their understanding of teaching and learning focusing on transformative and emancipatory approaches.

Prerequisites: AHSC 228, NURS 222, NURS 226, NURS 229 all with a minimum grade of 60% and NURS 230 with a CRG

Corequisite: NURS 341, NURS 342, NURS 351

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Analyze historical and philosophical perspectives of primary health care, health promotion, population health and the associated role of nurses working with communities
  2. Describe models of community health nursing and required practice competencies
  3. Examine the concept of empowerment as it relates to nurses role in primary health care and health promotion
  4. Distinguish between "community as client", "society as client"; and "global village"
  5. Identify patterns of nursing practice that emphasize community empowerment and capacity building
  6. Examine ethical considerations, power relations, and the political role of nurses when working with communities from a social justice and equity perspective
  7. Compare decision-making processes used when working with clients (individual, family, community and society)
  8. Incorporate innovative and transformative teaching and learning approaches when working with clients
  9. Describe the role of social marketing in health promotion and community development

Teaching and Learning Approach

A variety of activities provide students with opportunities to expand their understanding of the role of nurses in community practice and population health. Examples include active participation in discussions, case studies, community assessment, and critical analysis of issues.
