Teaching and Learning Approach

Participants engage in learning activities that are related to the main concepts of this course. They identify their own learning needs related to specialized knowledge in an area of interest (e.g., current health issue, research study, focus of practice, community project). Praxis is enhanced through reading, reflection, class discussion, written work and student independence in inquiry. In the Nursing Skills Centre, students will build on their foundational nursing skills knowledge and competence as they grow their psychomotor skill set to include increasingly complex applications. Classes will consist of theoretical concept review through in person class time followed by an instructor facilitated practice session in the lab. Content will be supported by pre-class student preparation activities provided on Moodle, including on- line skills based modules and readings from nursing related textbooks and online resources. Simulation and case study format will be used to consolidate learning and knowledge application. Knowledge and critical thinking will be evaluated through nursing skill demonstrations, and student presentations. Evaluation of nursing skills demonstrations will be conducted using the PebblePad platform. Nursing skills demonstrations will also provide an opportunity for student self-assessment and reflection, peer assessment and feedback, and instructor formative feedback.
