NURS 317 Relational Practice III: Connecting Across Differences builds on the concepts introduced in Relational Practice I and II and other previous courses, Relational Practice III provides a synthesis of knowledge that is the basis of critical relational analysis. This course focuses on enhancing participants' everyday relational practice with individuals, families, and groups. The emphasis is on engaging with the complexities of difference in everyday nursing practice and the challenges these complexities might pose for being in-relation with clients.
Prerequisites: AHSC 228, NURS 222, NURS 226, NURS 229 all with a minimum grade of 60% and NURS 230 with a CRG

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Examine the implications of professional caring across culture and difference
- Identify how their constitutedness and situatedness, communication styles and personal coping skills impact communication and teamwork
- Distinguish how stigma and marginalization affect individual and family health
- Identify what ‘professional privilege’ is and how it influences patient and team relationships
- Compare the outcomes of power-over behavior to peace-power approaches
- Develop strategies for working effectively with families of complex or palliating patients
- Clarify the differences and similarities between spirituality and religious belief systems
- Explain how suffering impacts patients and professional caregivers
- Determine: "Whom Do I Bring to Practice?"
Teaching and Learning Approach
1. Discovery and learning will take place through exploring and reflecting on experiences of difference and
diversity in the healthcare setting. The lived experiences of others and self will be analyzed through the lens
of ethics, social justice, safety, leadership and reconciliation.
2. Discovery will be facilitated through the use of current literature, media sources, and sharing of lived
experiences.
3. Learners will continue to develop critical thinking and self awareness through personal reflection and
assessments.
4. Learners will be provided material to review prior to each class to lay the foundation for learning and
discovery in the classroom.
5. Peer engagement and teamwork will also be fostered as a method of applying relational practices within the
safety of the learning environment.
6. Concepts and content within this course may be sensitive and/or triggering for some learners, therefore,
learners are encouraged to connect with the instructor throughout the course for support, as needed. The
instructor-student relationship is valued as a critical component of each person's relational practices learning
