Teaching and Learning Approach
This is an experiential instructor led practice course that takes place in approved health care facilities and/or
associated with approved health care providers. The practicum will provide opportunities for the learner to relate
theory to practice, as well as to develop the professional skills required in the work setting. The support and
guidance of the instructor is critical to the process by providing structured and specific on-site feedback. The
college instructor will be on site each day of the clinical rotation and will observe the student’s practice
intermittently during the practicum.
Participants learn about professional nursing practice, critical thinking, and critical reflection. Practice
experiences are supported by seminars which provide opportunities to examine theories and concepts for
discussion, exploration, and integration. Praxis involves the examination of the dynamic interplay between theory
and practice. Through praxis, participants have opportunities to actively participate in the construction of their
own knowledge. Praxis is actualized by critical reflection, journaling, and active participation in nursing practice
seminars. Faculty also foster exploration of the role of the nurse in relation to the promotion of health and
healing.
Simulation is incorporated into this practice course to allow the participants to apply relational skills, psychomotor
skills and theoretical knowledge utilizing simulated practice experiences within a safe learning environment. This
pedagogy supports the participant’s progression from novice to expert in nursing practice. Simulation sessions
will include in person sessions within the skills center and virtual online simulation activities.Learning Resources
