NUCL 180 Practicum

NUCL 180 Practicum provides the learner with a consolidated clinical experience where they can apply theory from the Nursing Unit Clerk program. Students work full shifts with an experienced Nursing Unit Clerk.

Prerequisites: NUCL 170 with a minimum grade of 80%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Communicate verbally using language appropriate to the situation
  2. Use active listening skills to record and relay verbal messages accurately
  3. Interact appropriately and efficiently with other hospital departments
  4. Correctly use technology associated with the job (e.g. computers, fax machines, photocopiers, and telephone)
  5. Transcribe information accurately and legibly
  6. Accurately requisition/enter physicians’ orders
  7. Maintain patient charts and records, meeting legal standards
  8. Apply problem-solving techniques to effectively deal with a variety of situations
  9. Work collaboratively and cooperatively with the health team members on the unit
  10. Evaluate situations, make informed decisions, and initiate appropriate actions
  11. Transfer skills and knowledge from one situation to another
  12. Perform tasks within a reasonable time frame for a beginning NUC, showing organizational skills
  13. Cope effectively with assigned tasks amid usual distractions and stressors of the nursing unit
  14. Maintain ethical standards with respect to privacy, confidentiality and personal behavior
  15. Display a professional demeanor at all times

Practicum Expectations for Students

During NUCL 180: Practicum, students are expected to:

Read all information provided in the online support course prior to placement.

Dress professionally in scrubs or appropriate office attire during the placement.

Maintain a positive working relationship with their supervising NUC and other facility staff.

Work toward the integration and consolidation of knowledge gained in previous courses.

Continue developing accurate and professional practices as a Nursing Unit Clerk.

Strengthen problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.

Build confidence in collaborating with healthcare team members to meet learning outcomes.

Meet or exceed the performance expectations set by the placement site.

Achieve all learning outcomes to a satisfactory level, as evaluated by the supervising NUC(s) during the placement.

NUCL 146, NUCL 152, NUCL 154, NUCL 156, NUCL 162, NUCL 164, NUCL 166, NUCL 168 and NUCL 170.

This textbook, used in MTED 100 and MTED 101 (Medical Terminology courses), is an excellent reference for reviewing medical terminology.

2. 2. Learn and complete simpler tasks

3. 3. Work side-by-side with the NUC and continue to take on more responsibility

4. 4. Continue to take on increasing responsibility in order to gain a deeper understanding of the full scope of the Nursing Unit Clerk role. This progression supports skill development, confidence, and readiness for independent practice.

5. 5. Readiness for Independent Practice Demonstrate the ability to work independently and show comfort and competence in completing the majority of the Nursing Unit Clerk’s responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
