NUCL 164 Laboratory Orders I introduces the learner to five subdivisions within the Laboratory (Lab), the role of the Nursing Unit Clerk (NUC) in processing Lab test orders, and how the NUC interacts with the Lab. Information is given about the various specimens obtained for testing, abbreviations and acronyms used in Lab test orders, and requisitions used for Hematology and Chemistry subdivisions.

Prerequisites: NUCL 154 with a minimum grade of 80%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Name and state the function of the subdivisions in the Laboratory
  2. Describe the NUC's role in processing Laboratory test orders
  3. Identify the different requisitions used for ordering various types of Laboratory tests
  4. State the types of specimens obtained for Laboratory tests, identifying who would be responsible for collection of each type of specimen
  5. Define terms used in reference to Laboratory orders
  6. Define the abbreviations and acronyms used for Hematology tests
  7. Describe the NUC's role in processing various Hematology test orders, demonstrating understanding of analysis priority
  8. Define the abbreviations and acronyms used for Chemistry tests
  9. Describe the NUC's role in processing various Chemistry test orders, demonstrating understanding of analysis priority
  10. Using example orders, complete Laboratory requisitions for various types of Hematology and Chemistry Laboratory tests

Teaching and Learning Approach

Online students create and follow their own study schedule. The instructor is available by phone during her office hours for one-on-one support. Emails can be sent at any time and will be answered during office hours.

Student will be expected to:

· complete graded items according to the due dates found in the online course calendar;

· participate in online discussion forums with their classmates regarding the role of the NUC in processing Lab orders;

· complete one assignment based on research;

· complete one assignment processing laboratory orders onto the correct forms, following the information presented in the course;

· complete a mid-course exam based on the first half of the course; and

· complete a final exam based on all the information in the course, with emphasis on the second half.

As you go through the course material use your reference textbook to look up the Laboratory tests for more information, relative to the NUC role (alternate names, abbreviations, indications). Note the appendixes at the back of the book which list tests alphabetically, by body system and by Lab panels. There is also an Index at the back of the book and a list of common abbreviations and acronyms.
