PPD 104 Introduction to Digital Design Applications. Developed to compliment and expand the skill set of the traditional artist, Introduction to Digital Design Applications will introduce students to image creation and processing techniques using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Emphasis will be placed on creative workflow, image file types, drawing and painting tools, colour correction and artistic exploration. Additional topics include the production of self-promotional materials for both print and web, and an introduction to 3D design options for both jewelry and clay production.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Both Photoshop and Illustrator: 1. identify the difference between vector- and raster-based graphics, and where each should be applied; 2. apply the tools in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to the creation of custom graphics for studio projects;
  2. Photoshop: 3. create, use, and modify selections; 4. use adjustment layers to perform color correction; 5. perform basic image compositing; 6. create repeating radial patterns; 7. edit images ; 8. move and transform objects; 9. work with layers; 10. create and edit type;
  3. Illustrator: 11. scan sketches from their sketchbooks to use as template layers for vector graphics; 12. utilize the pen tool to create vector graphics; 13. create open and closed paths; 14. add, subtract, and transform anchor points on a path; 15. alter fill and stroke color, and stroke width; 16. use brushes; 17. create and use custom gradients and gradient mesh; 18. utilize the pathfinder palette; 19. create and edit type; and 20. make repeating hexagonal patterns.
