PPD 103 Design as a Basic Visual Language. To introduce students to the elements and principles of design through a series of two and three dimensional design projects which place an emphasis on creative problem solving. Critical analysis and discussion will have an important role in all aspects of developing a visual vocabulary. Throughout course projects and personal research, students will investigate the process of design and the relevance it has to their studio practice, and their personal development.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify and use the elements and principles of a visual language
  2. Understand and utilize the basic elements of design (form, line, shape, value, texture, colour, space) and the principles of organization (harmony, balance, scale/proportion, rhythm and movement)
  3. Develop critical thinking skills through exploration and creative problem solving, and by developing a critical and aesthetic criteria
  4. Begin to explore, identify, imagine and problem solve with emphasis on individual and collective creative approaches, thus contributing to their understanding and appreciation of the relationship between art, craft and other disciplines
  5. Build and construct in both two and three-dimensional design
