PPD 101 Drawing as a Basic Visual Communication. This is a basic drawing course designed to give students a background and experience in the fundamentals of drawing as a basic visual communication. Through exercises and assignments, the student will learn to use drawings as a tool to record a concept, manipulate, develop, communicate and refine those concepts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Exercise basic drawing skills based on the elements of the visual language (line, value, space, texture, form and shape) with a variety of black and white mediums
  2. Exercise skill in observation, composition and process
  3. Render form and space using both intuitive and linear perspective
  4. Develop and communicate ideas through drawing
  5. Use a vocabulary of drawing terms and analytical skills in the critical analysis of two-dimensional work
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of constructive criticism
  7. Exercise high standards of craftsmanship and studio work habits

Teaching and Learning Approach

Instruction will consist primarily of focused exercises in a studio/classroom setting. Craft and design history elements will be conveyed through the use of lecture with supporting audio-visual materials. Group critiques and student presentations of completed assignments will be utilized to help develop presentation skills.
