FOR 278 Forest Technology Field School

School of Environment and Geomatics

FOR 278 Forest Technology Field School is a two‑week, end‑of‑semester field school provides immersive, hands‑on training to strengthen students’ technical field skills in preparation for summer employment and the second year of the Forest Technology program. Through intensive applied learning in real-world forestry settings, students gain practical experience with core operational activities, including:

  • Safe and effective use of forestry field equipment
  • Silviculture surveys and prescription‑related fieldwork
  • Forest measurements and sampling techniques
  • Cutblock development, layout, and basic engineering
  • Wildfire operations and fuel management practices
  • Geospatial data collection, navigation, and analysis
  • Applied ecology and wildlife habitat monitoring


By participating in these activities, students build the practical competencies required for professional, safe, and effective fieldwork aligned with provincial and federal forestry standards.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of ENVR first-year courses with a minimum of 60% or with School Chair permission.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Successfully complete the S-100 Basic Fire Fighting Standard
  2. Perform Fire Smart Evaluations for Landowners
  3. Perform Fuel Management risk assessments and formulate prescriptions
  4. Effectively perform and manage a typical operational forestry contract
  5. Assess job hazards and work safely and efficiently in a field environment using a variety of tools and equipment

Competency-based Grades

This grading system is based on satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of the course learning outcomes. It is used where standard numerical grades are not generally applied, for example in evaluating practicum performance or work placements, in pass/fail courses or for non-credit courses.

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
