NURS 430 Professional Practice V: Leadership in Nursing

NURS 430 Professional Practice V: Leadership in Nursing explores the ways nurses can provide leadership, influence, create and manage change for the promotion of health for individuals, families, groups and communities within the context of society and the world. Emphasis is placed on leadership roles of the nurse within practice contexts. The role of the nurse within the current and evolving Canadian health care system is explored including considerations of the impact of global trends and issues. Issues facing nurses in the current work environment will be discussed. Collaborative and ethical approaches for working within institutional philosophies and frameworks will be explored.

Prerequisites: NURS 341, NURS 342, NURS 350, NURS 351, NURS 370, and NURS 470 all with a minimum grade of 60%

Corequisite: NURS 431, NURS 360

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Critically reflect on leadership characteristics, of both self and others and develop a personal statement of nursing leadership
  2. Utilize leadership theories to create a plan for personal leadership development
  3. Evaluate personal leadership growth
  4. Utilize change theories, including Chaos Theory, Appreciative Inquiry to analyze issues within the current health care system
  5. Evaluate forces that direct and influence the health care system
  6. Examine a health care issue and articulate, verbally and in writing, the significance of the issue
  7. Disseminate findings, based on evidence, of a proposed resolution to a health care issue
  8. Critically examine nursing leadership contributions, roles, and responsibilities within inter-professional and inter sectoral teams
  9. Critically examine the power structures that shape health systems and health professional interactions

Teaching and Learning Approach

A variety of in-class activities provide participants with opportunities to develop leadership skills and view themselves as leaders with the professional mandate, knowledge, and competencies to influence change and thrive in our current healthcare system. Examples include active participation in discussions, case studies, media stories, debate, mock situations, reflection, and critical analysis of leadership in nursing and change processes. Theory and skills learned in N430 are intended to support your N431 nursing practice course and accompanying leadership project.
