MUSC 164 History of Rock. A study of the evolution of rock music from its origins to the present. Classes will focus on musical characteristics of the different styles within the genre. Sociological, geographical, literary and other cultural aspects will be discussed. Both audio and video clips will be presented for in-class analysis.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Understand and appreciate how Rock music has evolved throughout its history
  2. Define the distinguishing characteristics (melody, harmony, instrumentation, form, lyrics, playing styles, etc.) of the various styles
  3. Recognize hit songs from different styles and time periods

Classroom audio/video presentation, PowerPoint presentations, and musical interaction.
