MTED 101 Medical Terminology II. Learners study anatomy and physiology of the main body systems. Learners will learn the word parts, abbreviations, prefixes, suffixes, disease process and treatments relating to terminology specific to each body system, including disease processes and treatments. Learners will correctly pronounce medical terms relating to terminology specific to each body system.

Prerequisites: MTED 100 with a minimum grade of 80%

1. 1. Read through Chapter 21: Pharmacology in preparation for the NUCL 156: Drug Nomenclature course.

2. 2. Chapter 14 – Lymphatic and Immune Systems Identify the structures of the lymphatic system and understand how these systems function. Learn basic terminology, combining forms, and related words pertaining to the lymphatic and immune systems. Define terms describing pathological conditions affecting components of the lymphatic and immune systems. Identify laboratory tests, clinical procedures, and common abbreviations related to these systems. Apply knowledge by using medical terms in context, such as in medical reports.

3. 3. Chapter 5 – Digestive System Name the organs of the digestive system and describe their locations and functions. Define combining forms related to the digestive organs and understand associated terminology. Define signs, symptoms, and disease conditions affecting the digestive system.

4. 4. Chapter 6 – Additional Suffixes and Digestive System Terminology Define new suffixes and use them to form medical terms related to the digestive system. List laboratory tests, clinical procedures, and abbreviations relevant to the digestive system. Apply medical terms appropriately in context, such as in medical reports and personal vignettes. 5. 5. Chapter 18 – Endocrine System Identify the endocrine glands and the hormones they secrete. Analyze medical terms related to the endocrine glands and their hormones. Identify abnormal conditions caused by excessive or deficient hormone secretion. Describe laboratory tests and clinical procedures related to endocrinology, and recognize relevant abbreviations.

7. 8. Chapter 12 – Respiratory System Name the organs of the respiratory system and describe their locations and functions. Identify pathological conditions affecting the respiratory system. Study terminology related to respiration. Describe clinical procedures associated with the respiratory system. Define relevant abbreviations. Apply knowledge by using medical terms in context, such as in medical reports.

8. 9 and 10. Chapter 11 – Cardiovascular System Name the parts of the heart and associated blood vessels, describing their roles in blood circulation. Trace the pathway of blood through the heart. Identify major pathological conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. Define combining forms related to the cardiovascular system. Describe laboratory tests and clinical procedures pertaining to the cardiovascular system. Define relevant abbreviations. 9. 11. Chapter 13 – Blood System Identify terms related to the composition, formation, and function of blood. Differentiate among the four major types of blood vessels. Identify terms associated with blood clotting. Build medical terms and recognize combining forms used in blood system terminology. Identify various pathological conditions affecting the blood. 10. 12. Chapter 16 – Skin Name the layers of the skin and the accessory structures associated with it. Build medical terms using combining forms related to dermatology. Identify lesions, signs and symptoms, and pathological conditions affecting the skin. Recognize laboratory tests and clinical procedures pertaining to the skin, along with relevant abbreviations. Apply knowledge by using medical terms in context, such as in medical reports.

11. 13 and 14. C Chapter 17 – Sense Organs: The Eyes and Ears Identify the locations and functions of the major parts of the eyes and ears. Name the combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes commonly used to describe these organs and their parts. Describe abnormal conditions that may affect the eyes and ears. Identify clinical procedures related to ophthalmology and otology. Apply knowledge by using medical terms in context, such as in medical reports.
