MTED 100 Medical Terminology I is a course in which learners complete an introductory study of the construction of medical terms, including root words, suffixes, and prefixes relating to the various body systems.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Distinguish, pronounce, spell and give meanings for suffixes, prefixes and roots of medical terms
  2. Form plurals of singular medical terms
  3. Form singulars of plural medical terms
  4. Analyze words by dividing them into component parts
  5. Use combining forms, suffixes and prefixes to build medical words
  6. Define medical terms that apply to the structure and function of the human body
  7. Identify the body cavities and recognize the organs contained within those cavities
  8. Locate and identify the anatomic and clinical divisions of the abdomen and back
  9. Describe terms that relate to position, direction and planes of the body
  10. Identify the functions of the different types of blood cells

Teaching and Learning Approach

Online students create and follow their own study schedule. There is a suggested schedule for course completion within its time limit. The instructor is available by phone during her office hours for one-on-one support. Emails can be sent at any time and will be answered during office hours.

Student will be expected to:

· post an introduction in the Welcome Discussion forum;

· complete graded items according to the due dates found in the online course calendar;

· complete the assigned readings in the Language of Medicine textbook;

· complete the assigned exercises in the Language of Medicine textbook;

· complete a Chapter Quiz after each chapter of the textbook; and

· complete a two-part Final Quiz based on all the information in the course.

Detailed Course Content, Topics, and Sequence Covered

1. 1. Chapter 1 – Basic Word Structure Identify and divide medical terms into their component word parts. Understand the meanings of basic combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes. Apply combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes to construct and interpret medical terms.

2. 2. Chapter 2 – Terms Pertaining to the Body as a Whole Define key terms related to the structural organization of the human body. Identify the major body cavities and the organs located within each. Locate and describe the anatomic and clinical divisions of the back and abdomen. Define terms that describe body positions, directional terms, and anatomical planes. Recognize and understand the meanings of new word elements introduced in this chapter.

3. 3. Chapter 3 – Suffixes Define new suffixes and review those introduced in previous chapters. Combine suffixes with appropriate combining forms to build and interpret medical terms. Identify and describe the functions of the various types of blood cells in the human body.

4. 4. Chapter 4 – Prefixes Define common prefixes used in medical terminology. Construct and interpret medical terms that combine prefixes with other word elements. Explain the Rh antigen-antibody reaction and define related medical terms.

5. 5. Review all course information in preparation for Final Quiz.
