HSER 258 Fundamentals of Change I is designed to assist the student in developing self-awareness as a helper, and in developing both an understanding and a beginning level of skill. Students are required to participate in exercises, role plays, simulations and video taping of interviews and counselling sessions, in order to accomplish the course objectives.

Prerequisites: Human Services Certificate or Instructor's permission. ENGL 110 or enrolment in the Mental Health and Substance Use Advanced Certificate

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe professional ethics and the core values of counselling
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the helping relationship and core conditions for counselling to be effective
  3. Demonstrate the effective use of open-ended questions and active listening skills
  4. Demonstrate comprehension of empathy by illustrating various empathic responses
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of counsellor objectivity and self-awareness
  6. Examine the connection between ethical practice and self-care

Teaching and Learning Approach

This class requires active participation. Lectures, videos and teaching of skills are combined with interactive exercise, group discussion, and practicing active listening skills in dyads and triads. Studied concepts will be practiced through assignments which are designed to take the learning outside the classroom, allowing the student to apply newly constructed concepts, skills, and understandings.
