HSER 280 Advanced Human Service Practicum

HSER 280 Advanced Human Service Practicum is a second level or advanced practicum for individuals who have completed a previous block practicum or have demonstrated those skills through a PLA. After an orientation to the agency, students are expected to provide direct services, assuming full responsibility with appropriate supervision, to specified clients, or client groups. Students will develop competence in providing a specific service and in participating as a team member in the agency.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Work directly with individuals through the life span, and families or groups suitable to the students’ learning needs and career goals
  2. Develop an awareness of a variety of other service agencies and programs
  3. Relate theory to practice
  4. Demonstrate an acceptable level of integration of theory and practice within selected assignments and practice situations
  5. Demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical behaviour
  6. Experience a high level of supportive supervision concerning practical and professional functioning and observe skilled and knowledgeable practitioners at work
  7. Complete an in-depth examination of the role of the human service worker in a specific environment in relation to other human service professionals, and articulate that role clearly.
  8. Demonstrate increasing levels of responsibility and self-direction in preparation for the transition from student to new employee

Competency-based Grades

This grading system is based on satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of the course learning outcomes. It is used where standard numerical grades are not generally applied, for example in evaluating practicum performance or work placements, in pass/fail courses or for non-credit courses.

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
