ESSI 02 Expression of Self through Sign, builds on ESSI 1 to further familiarize learners with Signed English and to develop an increased awareness of self. Students experience aspects of teamwork through interpersonal communication and negotiating a diverse learning environment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Fingerspell fist letters and a selection of up letters from the ASL Alphabet
  2. Mimic simple signs
  3. Recognize appropriate facial expressions that express signed emotions
  4. Complete assigned tasks within a small group environment

Teaching and Learning Approach

Teaching methodology may include an arts based approach (e.g. through music and/or drama), group projects (e.g. public performances) guest speakers (e.g. speakers, musicians, choreographers), individual projects (e.g. reflective worksheets, poster) and discussions (e.g. common workplace expectations), delivered in lab and lecture format.

Learning Resources

Recommended: 3-ring binder, dividers, pen and pencils, and any personal stationery items for personal use (e.g. markers).

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
