ENVR 190 Computer Applications in Natural Resource Management. This introductory course builds on students' basic computer skills, focusing on applications relevant to careers in the environment and geomatics sectors. Students will learn to organize and manage files, create presentations and graphics, and develop spreadsheet skills. The course also covers formatting professional documents, setting up data collection on tablets, and transferring data between systems. Emphasis is placed on applying these skills to real-world tasks and demonstrating professionalism in digital work.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Organize and find files on various computer systems, including efficiently transferring files from field tablets
  2. Develop technical presentations and graphics using standard industry software
  3. Enter and manage natural resource management data in spreadsheets, including use of basic analytical tools
  4. Present written work professionally by formatting technical documents using word processing software
  5. Collect numeric and spatial data in a field setting
  6. Demonstrate professionalism in their digital work, including proper email etiquette, timely submission of assignments, and respectful online communication

Teaching and Learning Approach

This is a face-to-face lab course. Labs will start with an introduction to the material, and students will then work through step-by-step instructions to learn the material. All course materials will be available through the Moodle online learning platform. Note that the Course Schedule posted is subject to change.

Required: None – all materials will be uploaded to ENVR 190 Moodle site. Recommended: Notebook, pen, pencil, eraser, and ruler. Your iPad will be required for some labs, and you may find it useful as a companion in all labs.
