ENVR 170 Fish and Wildlife Ecology is designed to introduce students to the general ecological principles, taxonomy and management of fish and wildlife in British Columbia.

Prerequisites: ENVR 150 and ENVR 162 both with a minimum grade of 60%

Corequisite: ENVR 163

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the taxonomy and ecology of fish, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians in British Columbia
  2. Communicate effectively to multiple audiences
  3. Apply scientific knowledge to solve problems related to fish and wildlife conservation and management
  4. Develop professional attitudes

Teaching and Learning Approach

The course will be comprised of a 2-hour classroom session and a 3-hour lab session each week. Classroom sessions may involve traditional lectures, problem-based discussions, worksheets, short videos, guest speakers, quizzes and examinations. Lab sessions will occur both inside and outdoors and will entail use of fish, invertebrate, water quality, wildlife and habitat sampling equipment in the field. Inside labs may involve data sheets, worksheets, lab equipment, computers, use of spreadsheets, word processing, summary of scientific data and writing assignments.

Required: 1. Course notes for fish portion of the course (bookstore and online). 2. Standard personal field equipment is necessary as per school policies. 3. Field notebook, compass, clinometer, and scientific calculator. 4. iPad or Android tablet
