ECCE 186 Child Health and Safety is on personal wellness and the planning, establishment and maintenance of a safe and healthy environment in programs for children from birth to school age. Topics include: food preparation and handling; planning nutritious snacks and meals; universal precautions; diapering and toileting; accident prevention and hazard identification; medication; illness management, assessment and reporting; modelling healthy practices and utilizing community health resources.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Self-awareness of personal health and safety and modeling healthy and safe lifestyle practices
- Providing respectful and responsive individualized care and communication with children to:
a. promote their health through hygiene practices (including diapering/toileting);
b. create a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere through flexible daily routines;
c. provide nutritious snacks and meals; and
d. assess health and manage illnesses.
- Applying understanding of ways children learn to teaching of healthy and safe practices
- Establishing partnerships with parents to support children’s attachments to parents and staff
- Identifying health concerns, sharing information and collaborating with parents, colleagues, and resource people to optimize children’s well-being
- Designing and maintaining child-safe environments through identification and remediation of safety hazards, teaching safety practices to children, active and responsive supervision and effective accident management
- Formulating and evaluating policies and procedures regarding illness, accidents, and health and safety
Teaching and Learning Approach
Learners are expected to log on a minimum of 3 hours per week and complete all assigned readings and
assessments. This course uses a constructivist approach where the student is an active participant in the
construction of knowledge. Students will further investigate course concepts through group forum discussions
