CHEM 222 Physical Chemistry

School of University Arts and Sciences

CHEM 222 Introductory Physical Chemistry presents the basic concepts of chemical thermodynamics and equilibria. The properties of solutions, electrochemical reactions, acidic and basic systems are examined. The principles of reaction kinetics are introduced. In the laboratory, some quantitative properties of physicochemical systems are measured.

Prerequisites: CHEM 125 and MATH 101 both with a minimum grade of 60%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Recognize how ideal gas properties differ from real gases and approximate equations of state
  2. Track the flow of heat during physical processes and chemical reactions at constant pressure
  3. Derive thermodynamic results from the basic laws of thermodynamics
  4. Address realistic problems in chemistry using both thermodynamics and kinetics
  5. Determine electrochemical potentials, equilibrium constants, and thermodynamic properties for electrochemical cells
  6. Recognize the effect of temperature on reaction rates, understand transition state theory and be able to combine rate laws for chemical reactions
  7. Recognize the effect of catalysis and enzymes in our daily life
  8. Exhibit professional behaviours such as respect for colleagues, punctuality, willingness to think independently, and pride in presentation of work
