CHEM 213 Organic Chemistry II is a continuation of CHEM 212. The survey of organic families is continued with a study of aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acid derivatives, aromatics and amines. The chemistry of a variety of compounds of biological interest is also discussed. The laboratory work involves synthesis and organic structure determination.
Prerequisites: CHEM 212 with a minimum grade of 60%

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Determine the molecular formula of an organic compound from its mass spectrum, and combine this with other spectroscopic techniques to determine molecular structure
- Predict reactions of aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acid derivatives, aromatics and amines
- Draw reaction mechanisms for these reactions using curved-arrow notation
- Design syntheses of target molecules using these reactions
- Relate the structures of large biological molecules to their function
- Follow written laboratory procedures with minimal guidance
- Assemble laboratory apparatuses for reflux and distillation
- Use laboratory equipment and laboratory instruments
- Demonstrate critical thinking to reach conclusions based on experimental data
- Exhibit professional behaviours such as respect for colleagues, punctuality, willingness to think independently, and pride in presentation of work
Teaching and Learning Approach
The lectures in this course focus on the introduction of concepts and practice in problem-solving strategies.
Students are encouraged to enrich the class by asking questions and offering examples.
The lab provides opportunities to develop hands-on skills and to reinforce the concepts introduced in the lecture.Learning Resources
