Overview
Program Summary
Our health care system needs professionals who want to practice in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Moreover, professional health programs are specifically looking for students who have lived and studied in rural areas. Take the first steps toward a fulfilling career in the health sciences while studying in the relaxed environment of the beautiful Kootenay mountains.
Our comprehensive program in the health sciences pairs academic excellence with mentoring and community service opportunities providing you with the support you need to apply competitively to medical school as well as programs in pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, and more. Students develop strengths in leadership, resilience, communication, and service ethics that equip them to excel as they move forward along their various paths.
Program Outcomes
In addition to achieving the outcomes of the University Arts and Science program, graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Rural Pre-Medicine will:
- Be prepared to apply competitively to a variety of professional health care program including MD Programs
- Develop academic and non-academic qualifications needed when training to become health care professionals
- Understand unique characteristics of rural health care including the challenges facing rural communities and the benefits of practicing in a rural community
Program Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
Applicants may apply while they are completing prerequisite courses. However, applicants must have graduated from secondary school (or equivalent) and completed the following courses from the BC Provincial Curriculum (or their equivalents) before starting the program:
- English Studies 12 or English 12 First Peoples or IELTS 6.5
- Principles of Mathematics 12 or Pre-calculus 12
- Two other approved Grade 12 courses, one of which must be: Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Geography 12, Geology 12, or Physics 12
- Biology 12 and Chemistry 12 are strongly recommended
- Chemistry 11
- Physics 11 (minimum 60%)
Unless otherwise stated a minimum of 67% is required in all prerequisite courses.
Additional Requirements
In order to be considered for a conditional acceptance to RPM, we need to receive the following:
- completed Education Planner BC application to Selkirk College and associated fees (indicating interest in the Rural Pre-Medicine Program)
- completed RPM Application Form
- 2 letters of personal reference
- official high school transcripts
- any post secondary transcripts
***Students who receive a conditional acceptance must then pay a seat deposit, complete a Criminal Record Check and complete the CRT in order to secure their seat in the program.
Graduation and Promotion
To achieve a credential in this program you must complete all required and elective course requirements and achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.00
