TREC 159 Advanced Business Communications emphasizes a practical approach to business writing and speaking for advanced students. TREC 159 provides opportunities for students to use business communication tools including reports, memos, business letters, resumes, interview skills, oral presentations and visual aids. Business language strategies are emphasized to give students the skills to become effective cross-cultural communicators. These strategies include clarity of spoken and written English, the use of appropriate vocabulary, and an awareness of cultural variations in business organizations.

Prerequisites: EASL 048 with a minimum of 60% or equivalent

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Participate successfully in oral business activities such as telephone conversations and interviews
  2. Take organized notes from lectures, presentations, instructions or videos
  3. Give a well-structured oral presentation using appropriate body language and eye contact
  4. Support opinions and ideas using relevant details, logical arguments and evidence
  5. Use a wide range of conversation strategies including self-monitoring and rewording to clarify meaning
  6. Produce English phonemes and stress patterns clearly enough that pronunciation rarely prevents understanding
  7. Reflect on how verbal and non-verbal behaviours affect intercultural communication
  8. Employ technology appropriately to research, create and present assignments
  9. Write effective emails, resumes, business letters and other forms of business communication using a wide range of vocabulary

Teaching and Learning Approach

Instructors in the English Language Program use a communicative approach to teaching and learning. Lessons often include inter-active discussions, group work and reflection activities. Learner success in ELP courses is often demonstrated in tests & quizzes, presentations, assignments and active participation. Assessments include self and peer evaluations. The responsibility for learning is shared between the instructor and the student to foster independent learning skills.
