STAT 206 Probability and Statistics is an introductory applied statistics course for math, science, and engineering students. Topics include: set theory, probability, discrete and continuous variables and their distributions, joint probability distributions, point estimates, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing based on one or two samples. If time permits, we will discuss ANOVA tests as well as correlation and regression.

Prerequisites: MATH 100 with a minimum grade of 60%

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Summarize data either graphically or numerically
  2. Calculate the probability of an event using techniques such as counting, trees, and Bayes’ Theorem
  3. Calculate probability problems involving the following discrete distributions: binomial, negative binomial, hypergeometric, and Poisson
  4. Use integration and tables to solve probability problems from continuous distributions
  5. Solve discrete and continuous probability problems for jointly distributed data
  6. Derive a formula for a point estimator by the method of moments and maximum likelihood functions
  7. Calculate confidence intervals (for means, proportions and standard deviations) and percentiles based on a sample set of data
  8. Perform hypothesis tests concerning population means, proportions and standard deviations involving one or two populations

Teaching and Learning Approach

We will use the lecture periods to cover new material (approximately 1.5 weeks/chapter). Lab periods are used to practice that week's material, prep for exams, and some experimentation
