SSW 162 Community Resources is designed to assist students to prepare for practicum placement. Students will explore domains of practice and roles Social Service Workers have in the Human Services. Throughout the course, students observe and analyze resources and integrate observations with information that is presented in other Social Service Worker courses.

Prerequisites: Admission to Social Service Worker Program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Exemplify professional values and related behaviours and explain how they support the well-being of service users
  2. Justify the selection of resources for specific user groups
  3. Determine barriers service users might face when accessing services
  4. Create relevant professional and personal learning goals
  5. Demonstrate a growth mindset when giving and receiving feedback
  6. Discuss the difference between non-profit and government-funded agencies

Teaching and Learning Approach

This class requires active participation. The instructional activities in this course include min-lectures, videos, group presentations and guest speakers, combined with interactive exercises as well as small and large group discussions. Students will have opportunities to apply newly constructed concepts and understandings through a variety of course assignments. Note this course is fully synchronous and you will attend weekly classes on campus.
