SAFE 20 Safety on the Job Site I introduces students to what makes for a safe and healthy workplace. Students will learn about health and safety principles, rights and responsibilities of the employer and employee, WorkSafe BC, and hazard recognition in the worksite.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the roles and responsibilities of employment positions
  2. Identify strategies for incorporating health safety and wellness principles in personal and workplace settings
  3. Demonstrate the ability to request a safety orientation
  4. Identify and explain principles of occupational health and safety
  5. Identify common hazards in specific training area
  6. Follow the hazard reporting process for a given work site
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of workplace policies and procedures
  8. Understand and identify the role of WorkSafe BC, employer’s and employee’s responsibilities
  9. Understand and use workplace forms

Teaching and Learning Approach

Students can expect various teaching methodologies such as include small group projects (e.g. poster projects, classroom-based worksite activities), individual projects (e.g. reflective worksheets) and discussions (e.g. how to approach common safety problems).

Learning Resources

Recommended: 3-ring binder, dividers, pen and pencils, and any other personal stationery items for personal use (e.g. markers).

Grading Table

Competency-based Grades

This grading system is based on satisfactory acquisition of defined skills or successful completion of the course learning outcomes. It is used where standard numerical grades are not generally applied, for example in evaluating practicum performance or work placements, in pass/fail courses or for non-credit courses.

Grade Description
AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
